Matthias was born about 1740 in Cumberland Valley, PA, the son of unknown parents.
He died in BET 1811 AND 1812 in Probably Berkeley Cnty, VA.
His wife was MARY LITTLER, who he married in BET 1765 AND 1766 in Berkeley Cnty, VA. Their three known children were Matthias (c1767-1820), John B. (1769-<1824) and JACOB (1770-1852).
Note 1
Frequently bought & sold land; son, John, born in Pennsylvania; son, Jacob, born in Virginia. Lived on a large tract of land near Back Creek, VA. Record of officiating at funeral in VA.
Matthias Gossett was resident and landowner or "planter" of Frederick and Berkeley Counties, VA, in Colonial period.
Last record of Matthias Gossett is on the Berkeley Cnty, VA tax rolls, 1811 along with Matthias Gossett Jr. No evidence of Matthias' presence or death in Kentucky in Bourbon Cnty, KY through research of land, death, and marriage records that he is reported to have performed. The earliest marriage record performed in Bourbon Cnty, KY by a Matthias Gossett was March 1835 to latest in November 1845. The search found 13 marriages officiated by a Matthias Gossett, and given some missing pages in marriage records, probably would have not performed over 20 (my guesstimate, based upon his pattern). Records searched from 1786 - 1797, and 1798 until 1860; over 74 years. The minister of these records would be the Elder Rev Matthias Gossett (1798 - 1874), son of Jacob and grandson of Matthias. Both Jacob and his son, the Rev Matthias Gossett lived in nearby Clark, Montgomery and Bath Counties, KY in this time frame. The Rev. Matthias Gossett died in 1874, so it is possible he performed more marriages in Bourbon Cnty after 1860. (Judith Gossett Talla, 18 May 2010)
Matthias also had Revolutionary record of non-military service. Military service at that time was exacted from all males between ages 16-60; consequently, Matthias may have belonged to a religious group that forbade its members to serve in a military capacity.
Under Y-DNA study, is tradition suggests that Matthias had Huguenot record (son of John Gosset, who was grandson of Jean Gosset, a Huguenot, who took refuge in Jersey Island, England, in 1685, when Edict of Nantes was revoked. Research in progress.
Indenture Matthias Gossett to Jacob Gossett
